There is a lot of confusion about the best places to get traffic. Is SEO still viable? Is it possible get AdWords traffic without paying outrageous fees? Does traditional media have a role?
I’ll be sharing my thoughts on questions like these in future posts. But right now I want to focus on one source that I believe is grossly overrated and another that I believe is a “hidden gem” whose potential internet marketers overlook.
These recommendations come from data gathered through millions of dollars’ worth of testing. Remember, this is what I do for a living!
==> The Most CONTROVERSIAL “Overrated” Traffic Source!
Let’s start by talking about what I think is the most overrated traffic source: Social Media.
Wait, isn’t that blasphemy in the IM community!?
Look, I love Facebook, Youtube and all the rest of them. I buy a lot of Facebook adds to buy traffic. But building up a fan page, getting a bunch of fans and getting your message out to them is a lot of work.
When you add up all the time and money you spend to build up a meaningful enough presence to generate sales, it’s clear that your money could get a better ROI somewhere else.
Use Facebook and other social websites for branding and building relationships rather than generating massive traffic for a new launch.
If you want to know how “I” feel about social media for “profits” – just watch this video below. I couldn’t have said it better myself:

==> The Most “UNDERRATED” Traffic Source: LONG-TAIL AFFILIATES!
No, not affiliates generally. I’m talking about the LITTLE affiliates – the ones that can only send a sale here and there – the ones that NO ONE seems to care about 🙁
Well, guess what? They do about 60% of my sales when I release a product. Scout’s honor!
Getting affiliates to sell your stuff has always been a winning strategy to get traffic, and always will be. When most marketers target affiliates, they go for the big-names with millions of people on their lists.
While this is something you should be doing, you might be overlooking a hidden gem: “long-tail” affiliates. These are people who individually do not have huge lists. However, when you get thousands of them working for you, their sales add up.
Long-tail affiliates have been MONSTERS for my business. Around 60% of our sales come from them, and they drive most of our SEO and Social Media efforts.
If you are not tapping into this traffic source, then you are leaving A LOT of money on the table!
